The short answer: the UAE Golden Visa gives you 5 or 10 years of renewable residence without a sponsor. You can sponsor your spouse and children of any age, and your parents. You can stay outside the UAE longer than six months without losing it. If the holder dies, the family can stay until their permits expire. Applicants outside the UAE get a six-month multiple-entry visa to complete the process.
The 8 main benefits
- No sponsor needed. Your residence doesn't depend on an employer or on your own company, so you can change job or close a company without losing it (as long as you still meet your category's conditions at renewal).
- 5 or 10 years, renewable. Normal residence visas usually last 2 years.
- Family of any age. ICP lists residence permits for spouses and children "regardless of their age". A normal resident can only sponsor sons under 25.
- Parents too. ICP includes parents among the family members a Golden Visa holder can sponsor.
- More than six months abroad. A normal residence visa is cancelled after more than 180 days in a row outside the UAE. The Golden Visa is not.
- Domestic workers. You can sponsor domestic workers under the usual UAE rules.
- Six-month entry visa to apply. If you apply from abroad, you get a six-month multiple-entry visa, renewable once for six more months.
- Family security. If the Golden Visa holder dies, the family members they sponsored can stay in the UAE until their residence permits expire.

Property worth less than AED 2 million doesn't give a Golden Visa, but in Dubai it can give a 2-year property investor visa. Full details, documents and steps: our UAE Golden Visa guide.
Benefits people overestimate
- It is not citizenship. It is a long-term residence visa.
- It is not tax-free by itself. Your tax position depends on your home country's rules too; a UAE tax residency certificate has its own conditions.
- Renewal isn't automatic. You must still meet your category's conditions, for example keeping the property or the salary level.
